Feminist Bluff
May 31st, 2008 by A. du BeaumarchaisVia InstaPundit, a feminist group out of Minnesota is threatening to not vote for Obama unless Florida and Michigan’s delegates are seated at full strength (and the late word is they won’t be).
That seems unlikely.
Of all the groups that Obama has real problems with, for all the various reasons, I wouldn’t lose much sleep over the feminist vote if I were him. Perhaps Geraldine Ferraro is angry enough, with her personal involvement in this campaign, to sit out the election or pull the lever for a Republican. But in general concern about abortion rights and the Supreme Court are so fundamental it’s unthinkable that there would be mass defections away from any pro-choice candidate.
In case there’s any confusion, McCain himself has recently weighed in on what his Supreme Court nominees would look like:
I have my own standards of judicial ability, experience, philosophy, and temperament. And Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito meet those standards in every respect. They would serve as the model for my own nominees if that responsibility falls to me.
And if that isn’t clear enough, the New Yorker basically fisks the speech from a liberal perspective. Short version: Don’t be fooled!
A single-issue voter is not a person who cares about only a single issue. Instead, it’s someone whose vote can be completely determined by a candidate’s positions on one issue. For most feminists abortion rights is such an issue and come November, if he’s the nominee, Obama is their man.
